Rowethorpe’s History
In the mid-century, the Wesley Central Mission in Perth became involved in caring for the aged and looked for an opportunity to develop a Retirement Village. In 1961, the Mission acquired 32 acres of land in the burnt out Collier Pine Plantation at Bentley and began to build.

Named ‘Rowethorpe’ after Reverend GE Rowe, Minister of Wesley Church at the turn of the century, (“thorpe” is derived from the Old English/Anglo-Saxon word meaning small village or hamlet), the site provided for many who were unable to live without support because of frailty and ill health and has continued to evolve throughout the years.

Formerly operated by CMM Homes (Central Methodist Mission), Rowethorpe is owned and managed by Uniting Church Homes (UCH) and is the administration centre for UCH’s southern region.

Currently, over 450 residents are pleased to call Rowethorpe ‘home’ whilst a further 162+ clients, living in their own homes in the community, enjoy services provided by Uniting Community Care Services at Rowethorpe.

Our Independent Living Units form a large component of the Rowethorpe site which incorporates community care, day therapy, national respite for carers and residential care (both high and low).

Ownership and Management
The Rowethorpe community is located on a 13 hectare site under a Crown Grant in Trust arrangement with the State Government. The site is covered by the provisions of the Retirement Villages Act (1992) and the associated memorial has been placed over the title.

Rowethorpe is part of the UCH (Uniting Church Homes) group.

The Redevelopment: Revitalising Rowethorpe
The UCH Board approved the major revitalisation of the Rowethorpe community in 2006.

To date, we have already enjoyed the creation of Jacaranda Ridge (21 x 3-bedroom Independent Living villas / townhouses), Annesley (new 104-bed residential care facility), an upgrade to Cygnet (our dementia specific residential care facility) and ongoing conversion of existing single units into spacious modern two-bedroom + study apartments at Centenary. We have also completed a vast upgrade to The Terrace, our dining area which now proudly boasts a lovely alfresco, timber decked terrace, cafe and beautiful interior.

During 2009/10, we are undertaking extensive upgrading of the central Administration area including resident community centre, Rowethorpe Medical Centre and Pharmacy (due for completion December 2009) with an additional 16 x three-bedroom independent living villas, forming Stage IV (due for completion mid-2010). A new catering centre is also under development.
