Sarah Hardey is, in effect, the first UCH aged care facility with a long history behind it.
Its namesake, Miss Sarah Hardey, was the fifth daughter of Joseph Hardey, a settler of the Swan River Colony along the Maylands Peninsula in 1830.
In October 1917 at the age of 80, Miss Hardey established Hardey Lodge in Mount Lawley as a home for ‘wayward’ girls. She supported the home until her death in 1920.
In 1949, Hardey Lodge evolved to meet the emerging needs of a new audience: the aged. With refurbishment and new furnishings, it became home to 45 elderly ladies and became known as Sarah Hardey Nursing Home.
The age of the building was one of the deciding factors when Sarah Hardey Nursing Home in Mount Lawley closed its doors in November 2001. Some of the staff and residents transferred to the new 64 bed purpose-built care facility in Kelmscott as we know it today. With spacious lounges and dining areas in each ‘house’ and expansive central ‘activities area’, Sarah Hardey is a beautiful place to live.
